RAGBRAI Relay – 4/30/08
by Travis Alden, Tipton RAGBRAI Executive Co-Chair

Tipton’s local RAGBRAI organizing group has a sub-committee to oversee RIDE RIGHT activities. This committee is chaired by Dick Hall, a multi-year RAGBRAI veteran. The program was started by RAGBRAI in 1992 to promote bicycle safety in the communities that RAGBRAI will be visiting. In addition, the RIDE RIGHT committee is the key group who works with RAGBRAI officials and the Iowa DOT to make sure that the routes between overnight towns are safe and in good condition.

This past weekend Tipton’s RIDE RIGHT committee traveled the route between Tipton and LeClaire, part by vehicle and part by bike, as a preliminary scouting trip of the route. After such a rough winter, there are of course many trouble spots on these roads. However, officials are confident that the roads will be patched and repaired in time to provide a safe riding surface for the 15,000 RAGBRAI riders. The RIDE RIGHT committee will ride this route a handful of times this spring and summer to make sure all sharp turns, dips, etc. are identified.

Tim Cavanagh is the kind of class act that will accomplish that goal. With Tim as our “anchor” act, we can build the rest of the main stage show into a phenomenal afternoon and evening of fun.”
